Windows 2008 R2 boot Error c000003A after applying Windows updates, system will not boot

I have a Hyper-V VM that is halting at boot-time after applying Windows updates.  The system does the same thing every time it boots...it runs through the standard WINDOWS UPDATES messages of APPLYING UPDATE 1...2....3...4....and moves onto update 12098 of 97056 (System.Add...).

And that's all I get.  I have seen a lot of posts regarding this and I have not taken any action yet.  I DID try to do a repair and roll back, but there were no roll-back points.  Every time it boots, it stops at the same place.  I have exported the VM so I can try a lot of things with impunity...the easy part is that I'm able to mount the VHD in the Hyper-V host to access the Windows hard drive.

I have seem advice advising to open the pending.xml file and make change in it, but I'm not sure how to get exactly what to change...the many posts describing making changes to this file seem to be related to a very SPECIFIC error in applying Service Pack 1 that does not exactly match what I have here.

Can anyone advise what to do to get the pending updates to SKIP, or at least to find what update 12098 is and get THAT to skip?

Thanks!
