asked on

pulling data out of excel file?

Hi,

I have this excel data file.
Here is the simple example.
Columns are:
LastName, FirstName, TeacherName,CourseName

Target tables:
Student(studentid, lastname,firstname)
Teacher(teacherid,teachername)
Class(classid,classname,teacherid)

I am trying to find out if there are any tools I can use the import these records into those tables.

I was going to write up java or c# import script to read and insert.

Do you know about any other easy methods or tools please let me know.

The data I have looks like this:

Doe, John,Julie Martin, cs101
Doe,John,Sam Tools, mt201
Sim, Kevin,Julie Martin,cs101
Cook, Kyle,Sam tools,mt201

etc

I have 9000 records and I have 20 or so columns.

Should I normalize it on the excel or bring everything into database and normalize or just write up import script to do insert?

It's pretty easy to write a Java program to import, but almost any dbms you use would have an easy way to import a csv file such as you describe.

If you're using SQL Server, for example, you could use the SQL Server studio (used to be called Enterprise Manager) and select Tasks->Import Data which has a wizard which will walk you through reading in the file.

OK. It looks like I need to write up code to read and insert into tables  (build relations).

That's fine. I was just looking to see if there is a tool to handle the normalization and everything.
