DATE data type in SQL

We just migrated one Access back-end database to SQL Server database. But the customers still use Access forms and reports to the front end interface.

But we have troubles to store the date data. The customers only want to see the date part.
Since we are using SQL Server 2008 R2, we use "DATE" data type to save the data.

But the format became: 2012/11/7;

Our customers perfer the format 11/7/2012.
But we have the following troubles to convert the format:
1. We can't convert the column format to varchar because the output data needs to be sorted by this date column.
2. We prefer not to convert the format in the Access queries since we have bunch of Access forms and report. It's too much work.

I wonder if anyone has good ideas to deal with this issue.

Many Thanks!
