excel 2003 pivot tables

I am trying to make a pivot table in an excel 2003 document. I select the columns I want, then click on data, and select pivottable and pivotchart wizard. in the 1st step i have the data to analyze as microsoft office excel ro database, and for what kind of report, is pivottable. then i click next and it shows the 2 columns i want as selected. Then for "where do yo want to put the pivottable", i leave it as new worksheet, and click finish. so in the new worksheet, i have a area to drag to data into, and the two columns in the pivottable field list. however, i can only choose one of the fields. I'm sure i don't completely understand the whole pivottable concept, but i thought it would be better to choose both fields. I've tried holding the shift key down and clicking on both, or clicking and dragging the cursor, but nothing i have tried allows me to choose both fields.
What am i missing here? is it just that you can't choose two fields? if you can't choose two fields, why is that? is there a good explanation of pivottables somewhere that thoroughly explains the concept behind pivottables? maybe then i would understand why i can't do what i thought i should be able to do.

It would be helpful if you posted a sample file along with an illustration of the result your are hoping to get.
You can only drag fields one at a time if that's what you mean?

"In the field list you can choose where to add things using the drop down at the bottom then press add."

thank you, that helped so that i can add two things. but now that i can do this, I realize that I don't know what I'm doing, probably because I'm not getting what a pivot table is used for. I think I need to read the tutorial that krish5music provided.
OK, I had a breakthrough when I started playing with adding things to the columns and rows. Thanks for the help, I think I know what to do now.
