how to run dcpromo on virtual machine?? NEED HELP!

i am trying to run dcpromo on a virtual machine and it does not let me do it.  i get to the point where it keeps telling me that i need to run adprep/forestprep on the domain which i have done on all my physical domain controllers and all pass with no errors.

when i try to run adprep from the media on the virtual machine it keeps telling me that no entry point found and something about a NETAPI32.dll

what do i need to do to get AD installed on my virtual machine?

we are running 32 server 2008 on all domain controllers(physical), the virtual domain controller will be 64 bit server 2008 R2

i ran domainprep, forestprep on all physical domain controllers

i did not see on the media when a adprep32 only a adprep
there should be an adprep32 on the 2008 R2 media.  You don't need to run it on every DC just the two I talked about before.

Thanks

Mike
To add an additional domain controller to the forest you do not have to run adprep/ forestprep.   This is only done once.  You also ran adprep /domainprep.  These only have to be run once.  To install an additional DC in your environment you want to make sure of the following:

1. Static IP address
2. Subnet mask same as other DC's
3. Resolve the DNS server (nslookup)
4. Make sure you have a Reverse Lookup zone
5. You should have an account that is in the Administrators group of the local machine...

Run the dcpromo and then just follow the prompts.

Make sure you are using 64-Bit ... Windows Server 2008 R2 is 64-bit... this is an error regarding 32bit.  Are the other DCs 2008 R2?

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Thanks,

ok did all that.  no all the physical domain controllers are 32 bit.  the virtual one i want to make is 64 bit.

is that a problem?  does the virtual one have to be 32 bit to like the others?
no the virtual one can be 64  bit that is fine.    You can check your schema version

http://adisfun.blogspot.com/2012/09/windows-2012-ad-schema-version.html

You should be at 47 now if you did the prep for 2008 R2 correctly.

Thanks

also here is another bit of info.  i have no problem whatsoever creating another physical DC, it is just the virtual dc creation that i am having issues with
Is this the first 2008 R2 DC you are trying to create?

That adfind command can be run on any DC or workstation

AdFind V01.47.00cpp Joe Richards (joe@joeware.net) October 2012

Using server: ourserver.ourdomain.local:389
Directory: Windows Server 2008
Base DN: CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=ourdomain,DC=local

dn:CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=ourdomain,DC=local
>objectVersion: 44 [Windows Server 2008]

1 Objects returned
ok that means your schema is not updated yet

1.  Run netdom query fsmo on a DC

Now you will find your FSMO roles

on the schema master run   adprep32 /schemaprep  (wait for replication)

On the infrastructure run adprep32 /domainprep

then run the adfind command again

Thanks

Nice work getting your first 2008 R2 up,  did you end up pulling a new 2008 R2 copy down and get adprep32 from that?

Thanks
