TAPE0 disappeared from VMWare Server 2.0.0

We have a server running Windows Server 2003. On this server, we have VMWare Server 2.0.0

We also have an LTO4 attached to this server.

All was working just fine, until one day, one of my colleagues thought it OK to allow all of the Windows updates to run on the host.

This first of all "killed" the tape drive in Windows 2003, but I got that running because the server has Backup Exec 2010 on it, and the device wizard installed the Symantec drivers

However, my VMWare guests now don't have TAPE0 on the SCSI-Passthrough - in fact TAPE0 is not even an option in the drop down box any more!

I desperately need to get TAPE0 back to my guests so that I can test their backups.

Any ideas please?

Have you try to restore the windows tape0 driver ?

How would I do that?
Goto hardware manager remove Symantec drivers, and then right click on tape0 to install new Microsoft driver or the orignal one delivered with your tape drive.
Try rolling back your ALL your Windows Driver Updates.

Please also note VMware Server 2.0 was discontinued, and extended support ended last year in June 2011.
I'm getting frustrated with this. I have been through the device manager, and first of all rolled back the drivers as far as possible, then removed the device.

I have the correct Dell specific driver on disk. I can install this driver, and can then see the drive as TAPE0. I've even got it to work in VMware.

BUT restarting this server, seems to kick out the Dell driver, and replace it with an IBM Driver (one which a colleague had attempted, and didn't work properly). This happens on every reboot.

I can't seem to force out the IBM driver and get the Dell one to stick.
I would delete the IBM Tape Driver from disk.

This problem has not been resolved, and I am now using an LTO4 on another server to restore data from. This doesn't need any further work as the server and drives are now being replaced.
