NetBios and "\\"

I would like to know when Netbios gets used in windows.
For instance when we use 2 back slashes \\computername. In this case is Netbios or DNS or SMB is used to connect to the computername and probably to the share when we add the share name .ex: \\computername\sharename.

I know that when we type "www" on the browser , this uses DNS, but I am not sure when Netbios and SMB get used.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

When you right click on the computer icon then click Manage then from file menue of computer managemet you connect to a remote computer to see the computer management of the remote computer. In this case when you enter the computer name to connect to , is this using Netbios to connect to a remote computer or DNS? simce you are entering just the name of the computer and not the FQDN
