Sharepoint Alerts not going to external users

I have SharePoint 2010 and Exchange 2010 running. SP Alerts are working for internal users, but not for users with an external address. I would like to have external users be mail users, but I also tried using a contact and forwarding all email to the external contact.

I added a Send Connector & Receive Connector for the SP server. The Send Connector uses the domain name system (DNS) "MX" records to route mail automatically.

I tried adding the Exchange server as a smart host on the SP server, but that didn't work.

It sounds like you have not configured Exchange to allow your SharePoint servers (or possibly all servers on your internal subnet) to relay mail to other domains.   I am out of date on the details of how to do this in Exchange, but it is almost certainly not permitted by default.

From my understanding, the Send Connector & Receive Connector are suppose to allow relaying.

As long as the external users' email addresses are in the site, SharePoint will send.  As the other expert's suggested, this is an Exchange issue.

I had the authentication wrong. I changed it to 'Externally Secured' and it's working. Thanks.
Be careful with externally secured, as that is basically removing all relaying protection from the connector. If configured incorrectly it can turn your server in to an open relay.

Simon.

Yes, I have it locked down to specific ip addresses.
