HP laptop won't boot

H-P Pavillion DV6700 laptop, Vista Home Premium. It's not quite five years old.

Symptoms: The computer starts to boot (fan starts, lights above keyboard come on), but after about a second, the fan stops and the sequence starts over. No beep indicating a POST. Holding the power button down has no effect (i.e., does not stop the sequence).

The symptoms are the same whether one is using the battery only, the power supply only, or both. The only way to stop the cycling is to remove the power source entirely.

From what I've found, it appears as though I'm looking at a motherboard problem, but I would like some verification.

Thanks,

ep

Thanks, all. All of the sites I'd looked at (maybe half a dozen) indicated a motherboard problem, but I do appreciate the other suggestions.

Fortunately, it's not mine.
