X session not working

I recently ugraded my R intallation on RHEL 5, and now X session won't initialize. As recourse, I reinstalled X with the following command:

> yum groupinstall "X Software Development"

And then I tried

> startx

You can see the failed results below.

the first errors you get are relative to missing files in metacity

the second you get are probably relative to stale configuration of gnome-panel

first step should be to reinstall metacity, the second errors should not block you. in case reinstalling does not help, you can start the various gnome components one after the other to make sure you know which one dies, but you only have errors relative to gnome-panel which is run by nautilus when it sets the desktop
Rerun the graphics configurator
Login and run system-config-display.  An update you applied may have kicked the graphics driver I.e. kernel update etc.

can you attach the log ? should be /var/log/Xorg.0.log or something similar
What do you mean with "I recently ugraded my R intallation on RHEL 5"? Did you upgrade from an older version of RH to RH5? If so from which version? How did you upgrade?

Generally RH doesn't recommend upgrading, but rather to do a fresh install and then adjust the config files...

What GPU are you using?

Newer Linux Installs generally don't need an xorg.conf file, so try deleting or renaming it.

I reinstalled metacity, but I'm still getting the same error. Note, I'm running RHEL on an enterprise server; I'm not using gnome.
I reinstalled system-config-display and got the following warning:

Good question about the upgrade. I used that term rather loosely. In fact, I deleted the old installation of R and installed a new one compiled from source. Specifically, I downloaded the source code from CRAN, and compiled it using the typical make/check/install.

The one thing thing that I changed in the R install was to use dynamic libraries in the configure step:

> make check
> make install prefix=/usr/local/lib64/R-2.15.2 install

Frankly, I was surprised to see that X, which was previously working fine, failed after I installed the newer version of R.

As for your other questions, I'm not sure what GPU am I'm using. This particular server is VMWare running on an enterprise "cloud".

I tried to rename the xorg.conf file, but that didn't make a difference.

Rindi, just taking the comments in order :).
look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file which is most likely inherited from your previous setup

it is possible that it references a graphic driver (or other) that does not exist on the new system

you can simply rename the file to run xorg with no config which should start or roughly any system so you know if the problem is in the xorg config file. if you did not install the vmware tools, it could be that driver

if you could please post the log, we could get much more information

you may also try to run xorg without using startx. maybe the problem is in the desktop and not in xorg at all. this should help to pinpoint the problem.
Where there dependencies that you had to install prior to R compiling, gcc, glib, etc?
X is searching for XML config/settings files that are no longer available on your system.
If this a server, why are you trying to startx?
If you need to get a graphical tool on your remote client you could use ssh with X11 tunnel with an X-windows environment on your desktop.
