vmware : taking image of the existing servers and use them same as before

we would like to implement full fledge VMware in our organization.

as there are lot of windows based servers we are using  as - active directory , web servers ,application servers and for the Databases as well.

to simplify the migration from existing  physical servers into vmImage servers, what is best feasible procedure.

??- All presently running servers can it be converted into VM-image backup without actually rebuilding them and started using them same as before

please elaborate some other advantages too.

Thanks for help

thanks you both for sharing some info.

as i am not into technical role  rather in  managing technical aspect of company, and  looking into VMware abilities can / can't  , stuff prior to use this in our environment.

From the above explanation,  Can I deduce that ,
1- our physical servers image can be takenup,  and  without actualy rebuilding them and its VM-image can taken and  used it as same match to its earlier  physical  server capability if the configuration is same, without actauly need of any extra configration with in that server.

2 -

thanks for your clarifications so far-

we have  one production server, its primary drive C:\  has with very less space, around just 2GB only.

?? -  would like to know, while in process of taking & restoring its image, Can its C:\ drive space can be expandble.

in other words, Prior taking its image( means Currently )  the space of C:\ drive  is - 2GB,
can this be made expandble as per our requirement(>2GB ) while preparing its image ?
