Numerous commands hang on SLES11 SP2 (OES)

I was brought into a server which is hanging upon running various commands.  The commands 'top', 'ps', 'w', and others hang indefinitely.  Managed to get an strace on them from another session, and all of them hang at this point:

connect(4, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/novell-lum/.nam_nss_sock"}, 35

The file descriptor number will differ, but it's always pointing at that particular socket.  The socket exists, and it's readable by anyone.

This is quite obviously a Novell-oriented issue.  I was told we don't need DHCP or DNS run on this server, nut they definitely need NCP.  I'm really not a Novell Netware admin, so NCP is out of my scope a bit.  I've run SuSE Linux between 9.x and SLES10, and OpenSuSE from 11.1 through 11.4.  But I've not worked with this version, and certainly not with NCP.

Looks like the problem is related to the name service switch configuration.  If 'nam' is taken out of the lines it's in, the commands become responsive again.  So, the question is, how do I figure out why these commands are hanging, and/or how do I fix this issue?  I'm not even sure which binary is responsible for handling the 'nam' name service, so I'm really not sure what is misconfigured.  There's an /etc/nam.conf that looks like it's been configured (presumably properly, but I wouldn't bet on it).

Anyone familiar with this name service and able to point me in the right direction for fixing it?  All we really need is NCP, from what I was told.

for a socket there are two parties needed, one at each end of a socket.
So most probably the server part for this is failing to answer the queries.
[ Filesystem sockets work like network sockets, just without all the handling of a network protocol ].

Anything in the log files about ncp?

The other provided answer was less specific than what I actually found.
