How do I get Ubuntu terminal prompt in Windows 7 with VMware Player

I installed VMware Player on my Windows 7 PC. Now I downloaded ubuntu (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso) software from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop .

I installed ubuntu via the instruction at http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11287/how-to-run-ubuntu-in-windows-7-with-vmware-player/ .

It is version Ubuntu 12.10. Now I have the ubuntu installed and it shows up in the left corner when I double-click on VMWare Player icon.

How do I get the UNIX like prompt in ubuntu here? I tried all icons but I find no ways. The documentation in the above link shows there are "Applications" ->"Accessories"->"Terminal" menus that takes it to the UNIX like terminal. But I do not see such options.

I anticipated something was wrong and I reinstalled ubuntu and that gives the 2nd ubuntu(2) icon in the VMWare screen.

When I double-click "Ubuntu" or "Ubuntu(2)", I get the other screen (E2.jpg). Could you let me know how I get to the terminal so that I could try out something like the hadoop and hive installation, I am too far away, it seems. Thanks a lot.User generated imageUser generated image

is that you desktop, you should have other applications on icons, down the left hand side?
Try pressing your Start button or Alt + F2
Does anything appear?
First make sure you have the newest VMware Player version installed (there should be an "upgrade" option if you click on "Player", "Help", "Software Updates".

When installing Ubuntu, before starting the installation check the settings for the VM. Make sure you have selected 3d acceleration for the video card.

After that I suggest removing the installations you already have and do a fresh one.
Try putting the application in full screen mode....else try VirtualBox.

Thank you. The above attachments are the screen when I click on the VMWAre Player icon on my Windows7 PC screen.
I tried Alt + F2 . ctrl-alt-t or ctrl-alt-1 to ctrl-alt-6 did not do anything on the screen.

I installed newest VMPlayer (yesterday). Downloaded from their VMWarePlayer website.

Not sure what the VMWare Tools installation is. But when I try to do that I get to the attached screen below. It shows at the bottom "Mount the virtual CD drive in the guest, launch a Terminal, and use tar to uncompres ...."

Somewhat I do not understand.
If I finally have to give up, where shall I download VirtualBox from ? Is it https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads ? thanks.User generated image
your installation of Ubuntu Desktop does not look complete.

you should have icons on the left side of the screen

You'd have similar problems in VBox, only there the tools have a different name. In my point of view VMware Player performs better than VBox, so if I were you I'd stay with VMware Player.

If I'm not mistaken, if you install Ubuntu using the instructions of the Link you posted above, the VMware Tools get installed automatically. Can you show a screen shot of your VM when Ubuntu has started? Also, if you click on "Player", "Manage" of the started VM, what does it show there?

The VMware Tools are needed, they install special drivers for your Virtual hardware, they make the system perform better, you get better mouse control and a good driver for the display, better LAN performance etc. You also get more functions, like unity (similar to XP Mode), and shared folders.

Thanks a lot for the information. I am trying with VMware Player only now. I think the VMware Tools got installed (automatically) via the instruction steps in the link http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11287/how-to-run-ubuntu-in-windows-7-with-vmware-player/ .

The icons do not show up on the ubuntu purple screen above for me. I do not know why -- the installation of  the VMware Tools give no error. Now when I mouse-over then double-click the left part of the purple screen along the vertical location where your screen shows the icons, it opens up the corresponding tool (like office, amazon shop, etc.).

But I do not get the options  "Applications" ->"Accessories"->"Terminal"  that could take me to the UNIX like prompt. I have attached the screenshots.User generated imageUser generated imageUser generated image
In your screenshot it says "Reinstall VMware tools". When you have that as the option it means they are installed. Otherwise it would say "Install VMware Tools".

I suggest you install Ubuntu 12.04 and not 12.10. In a previous Distrowatch weekly there was a review of Ubuntu 12.10, but there were bugs and it generally didn't work properly, while Ubuntu 12.04 is really stable. Maybe you are experiencing some such bugs.

Thank you. I removed Ubuntu (12.10 ones) and then downloaded and installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the installation went through without error and it installed the VMware Tools (the UI said during the installtion). But I still have the same problem. The screen is empty and the links are there but under a black vertical strip on the left-hand-side of the screen. I tested with changing the background image (prom the purple to light colors but the issue persists).

There is no option for "Applications" ->"Accessories"->"Terminal". Also on the Ubuntu screen, "Player"->"Unity" gives me the attached error. Is it expected on VMWare Player...?
