add your sharepoint admin account as a local admin on the sharepoint servers.

Hi,
as jimes82 mentioned, your account has to be in the farms administration group.
But still, the account who did install SharePoint has the most access to everything - therefore it is recommended to install SharePoint with a dedicated windows domain account.

Hi,
how do you connect to the Central admin site?
Using a local (client) browser or on the server the link through "Start -> Programs -> Microsoft SharePoint"?
If you are on the server try to start the link "as administrator" (right-click -> Run as administrator).
