Update server from Win2003 Standard (32bit) to Win2008 Enterprise (64bit)

We have a remote server (64 bit Dell R300, no DRAC) running 32 bit Win 2003 Standard that we want to move to 64 bit Win 2008-R2 Enterprise. We want to do this remotely (in place?) and are unsure about the options available to us.

The Win2003 install is not currently in use and the 'new' Win 2008-R2 will become a DC for a 2 machine Win2008-R2 (x64) domain. The second machine has hosted Exchange (2010) and the main objective here is to move the Global Catalogue from the Exchange machine to the 'new' Win2008 DC.

What is the simplest way to get Win2008 onto this box?

Cross architecture upgrade is not possible. i.e. upgrade from 32bit to 64bit is not possible.

You will have to install additional DC (windows 2008) and move the roles to the new 2008 DC.

After that you will have to point exchange to the new 2008 DC

I have seen conflicting information about x86 to x64 options. Is there another way to get 2008 installed on the server remotely? The existing 2003 installation has nothing we need.

Is there a mechanism via Windows Deployment Services? I'm afraid I don't know much about this area and I'm just throwing the name in as it seemed to offer an option.

The answer is correct although sadly it doesn't help me.

Thanks anyway.
