Exchange 2010 and Windows Backup

Hi,

Need some help. My cenário:

1 AD
3DC´s
One DC is also Exchange 2010 SP2
All Windows Server 2008 R2
1 database (no dag)

I am in a new job and they do not have any backup of Exchange. I asked how they do to clean the transaction logs and they simple "delete older ones".

Well, i figured that if i can make a backup work, the log size wont be a problem anymore and to be perfect i would still have a Exchange backup.

In this moment the only backup solution i got is Windows Backup, so i scheduled a complete server backup. This fails on EXCHANGE CONSISTENCY CHECK.

Looking at the logs, the server complais about a lot of missing logs. The problem is i dont have them and I still have about 130gb o log files (!!!).

My questions:

How do i get rid of these amount of logs? Im considering to use circular log just to clean it. Is it a good ideia? What would be the possible problems with circular logging? Any impact in my enviroment?

Cleaning the logs, the Exchange consistency check would pass?

Any ideas how to resolve my problems?

Thanks very much

Well, lets try first things first!

Do i have any risk enabling circular logging or it is a complete secure procedure?

I want to enable it, restar IS servisse, wait for log to be clean and disable it.

After this procedure i could test the database unmounting it and mounting again (perhaps a "eseutil /mh" meanwhile). But if the databse goes down dirty? How will i fix it?

Thx again
On Exchange 2010 you don't have to restart the information store, just dismount and remount it. It is pretty risk free, but do take a backup immediately afterwards. As long as you mount/dismount through the Exchange tools it shouldn't become dirty.

Simon.

Good news and a question:

Good news: Everything fine, logs ok, circular logging already off and backup ok!

Question: Shouldnt the remaining logs be deleted after the full backup? I see logs with timestamp before the full backup...
Ya, full backup will purge all old log files automatically.

Well, seems that it did not... What should it be?

Thx for all the help so far!
