Windows 7 unable to update... firewall problems

Windows 7 home premium SP1/Asus Laptop -K53E

Getting an error 1068 when trying to start the windows firewall in services. Also a message "The dependency service or group failed to start".

Getting a 0x80070424 error when trying to run Windows update.

Also Background Intelligent Transfer Service is not listed in services anymore.

Have tried most of the fixes listed on Google to no avail. Including support@microsoft.com

Really don' t want to backup and nuke this laptop. Anyone have any idea what I should do?

Thanks in advance...

Thank you.  We will try this tonight and advise.
Check for any 3rd pary Security or AV applications that might be overridding these settings

You can try to disable, or uninstall the apps and see if it helps
