SBS 2011 DNS issues requiring restart

We keep having weird things happen to our server over last 12 months, if I restart entire server or just the DNS service it seems to resolve the problem.

Latest issue was that 1 client could not receive our emails (we'd get a delayed message back). Restarted DNS cleared the problem.

I cant recall the other issues we've had, but it's always the DNS.

Does anyone know whats going on here? or better know how to resolve it?

Thanks, can you let me know why it is having the issues and why it requires the fix you suggested? What does this do?

What difference does it make to set it to my ISP's or Googles DNS?
No idea why - just seen the problem on every SBS server and that permanently fixes it.

What it does is allows external DNS lookups if the info cannot be resolved internally.

Try it - it will fix the problem.

There is no difference between your ISP's dns servers or Googles - you can add both.  It is the presence of something to forward DNS requests to that makes it work.

Done, we'll see how we go.

If anyone can give more info about the why, that would be awesome!

But huge thanks (if it works) for your help.
You are welcome.

Being in support, I don't tend to get too deep into the why it happens, just the how to fix it, but sometimes it can be useful to know why.
Not an ideal explanation, but an alternative solution:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2009/01/29/cannot-resolve-names-in-certain-top-level-domains-like-co-uk.aspx

Again, shouldn't be necessary, but it is.

Do you suggest to do this or do you think the DNS forwards will be enough?
It's an either or.  Your call.

I always use forwarders, but the alternative may be just as effective, but I have never tried it (yet)!!

Not sure if it will resolve everything as it will need some time to test and see. But seems to be the right thing to do :-)
If it doesn't resolve the issue - come back and let me know, but I am certain I won't be hearing from you about this again.

Best wishes
