cannot boot windows with external usb drive

I have the old asus w6a. I cloned the drive using acronis to an external sata drive (this is the drive for my other laptop, I use the usb to sata cable to connect). For some reason it will not boot into windows. I already changed the bios setting and set the usb drive as primary. After I turn on the laptop, I see the asus logo and then it stuck at the black screen with a underscore sign keep flashing.

I also removed the internal hard drive and checked the bios again, the usb drive is listed under hard drive. no luck

Since the external drive is a laptop drive why don't you insert that drive into the laptop to see if it will boot off the drive, if not there may be something wrong with the image. Not sure why you are trying to boot the laptop to an external device any way. What happens if the external cable is accidentally pulled out then your system would crash and you would need to reboot windows.

>> You can't just clone an internal Windows OS to a USB drive
but the drive is a sata drive not really a USB thnb drive that counts?

I tried to insert the cloned drive internally, it worked. I just want to know why it wouldn't work externally through USB cable....

Rindi, I am not sure what you mean ... oem? and what you mean the hardware is different? it's the same computer, just different drive though

it's the same laptop. I just took the hard drive from my old laptop (second laptop) and tried to do a clone of the internal drive.

If I were to restore the cloned drive to another new computer, you mentioned paragon can do this? (restore to dissimilar hardware) I know acronis can also do it. Have you tried both? which one have a higher successful rate?
i have only tested with paragon - and it did work for me
note that the licence problem will exist there also..
And it won't work with any program if you want to boot from USB.
