Office 365 - #550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.ExRecipNotFound; not found ## Error

I have recently removed 2 email accounts from our Office 365 site and deleted the user accounts from AD.  I then created 2 global distribution groups with the same names as the recently deleted user accounts with the purpose of using the addresses as distribution groups in Office 365.

I have updated the displayName, legacyExchangeDN, and targetAddress in the attribute editor and forced a sync with the PowerShell Online Directory Sync cmd.

When I try to email the accounts, I get a kick-back with the following error:

IMCEAEX-_O=EXCHANGELABS_OU=EXCHANGE+20ADMINISTRATIVE+20GROUP+20+28FYDIBOHF23SPDLT+29_CN=RECIPIENTS_CN=5c2751c562d840a094d1718395a8bb99-user@exchange.prod.outlook.com
#550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.ExRecipNotFound; not found ##

I have deleted the autocomplete address from Outlook, but it still will not send correctly.  When I surround the email address like so, 'user@example.com' it sends correctly.

I have many users who will be sending emails to these 2 distribution groups.  What can I do on the AD/ADSI Edit side to get this working without having to delete autocomplete entries on the entire company's computers?

Any help is appreciated

Also, just confirmed that when I type in user@example.com, it resolves to User.  When I click on the properties, I can see that is pointing to the old user account.
