Exchange 2010 Database Size

We are running Exchange 2010 SP1 in a DAG environment.
The problem we have is that one of our exchange databases is almost 70G in size.  When we checked for white space it displayed about 550MB.  Running a PowerShell command to list all mailboxes in that database totalled to about 22GB in size.   What we are trying to find out is why this database is so big.  What commands can we run to figure out what is taking up all this database space??

Thanks

try

Get-MailboxStatistics -server serverName | select displayName,deletedItemCount,@{l="TotalDeletedItemSize";e={$_.totalDeletedItemSize.value.toMB()}} | export-csv c:\list.csv

Could be some space in Dumpster that you can find with

Get-Mailbox | Get-MailboxStatistics (Take this data to Text or Excel and check)

Akhater,

i tried your command exactly as it is (changed the server name to mine) all i get is a blank sheet...

Any idea?

Cheers
Rancy,

i ran the command, what am i looking for to determine dumpster space and what do i do after that?

Thanks
Get-MailboxDatabase -Status | Select Servername, Name, AvailableNewMailboxSpace

Rancy,

im not sure what you are trying to tell me, but as the intial post the white space is only 550MB on this particular DB and few MB on others DB's?

Can you please elaborate in more details?

Thanks
Get-Mailbox | Get-MailboxStatistics -server serverName | select DisplayName, DeletedItemCount, Itemcount

Sorry I was away

i tested my code again and it works weird !

it must be because of SP1 anyway try these 2, the second is a bit slower to execute but might work for you

Get-MailboxStatistics -server serverName | select displayName,deletedItemCount,TotalDeletedItemSize | export-csv c:\list.csv

Get-Mailbox -ResultSize unlimited | Get-MailboxStatistics | select displayName,deletedItemCount,TotalDeletedItemSize | export-csv c:\list.csv

ok,

before i try these command, what am i expecting and what am i looking for please?

Just to add more information we have Journeling enabled and third party (Mimecast) archiving solution in place.

Please can you detail as what these commands will do and what i should be looking for?

Thanks
It will show you the dumpster size of each mailbox or, in other words, how much deleted items are taking place and not yet given back as white space
ok, can you suggest a command for running it on a databse rather than the server please, i like to run it on a per DB if this is possible?

cheers
makes sense
please try

Get-MailboxStatistics -Database DBName | select displayName,deletedItemCount,TotalDeletedItemSize | export-csv c:\list.csv

Ok i run this command in my lab first, i see some TotalDeletedItemSize against a user, what do i do now?

or whats the command to delete this?

Thanks
If you want to delete it for all users in a database just go to the database properties and set the retention period to 0

if for one user only from  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd298173.aspx
Search-mailbox -identity <alias> -SearchDumpsterOnly -DeleteContent
so where does this command delete items from? is it from "recover deleted items" that we see in outlook or from somewhere else?

cheers
they delete it from the dumpster, the dumpster is where the items go after they are deleted from outlook and before being removed from the database

Recover deleted items is part of it
ok strange thing is when i add the total mailboxes size its totals around 22GB and the dumpster for all the users in this DB is probably around 10GB, so still dosent justify 70GB! the whitespace is 550mb.

So whats going on and what is taking all this space?

please advise?

Thanks
you also have to count deleted mailboxes that are still in the retention period
Also the command you suggested to delete from one user, i get the error below, what am i doing wrong..?

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Search-mailbox -identity administrator -SearchDumpsterOnly -DeleteContent

close EMS open it again and test
a diffrent error now?

to delete you need to add yourself to the import/export role as well
