Hi. I have installed
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

but after running it I cannot find any menu that gets me to the  "new right click menu":
as in "Here’s what the new right-click menu will look like after installing this registry hack"

Please can you tell me how to get to this? (Looks like an idiots guide is neccessary 'cos I just can't find it!)

Thanks. Stuart
Could you please send me the screenshot?
Hi. Sorry, I'm lost! I can't send a screen shot because I dont know which screen!
Could you just tell me (from the start menu) where I should be going - then I can send you the screen shot if i am at the correct place and the "Take Ownership" choice isn't showing.

Thanks
No worries. Please follow the below steps and let me know if it helps.

Go to Control panel->Programs and features->Turn windows features on or off(On the left side of the screen)->Check Indexing Service and reboot your computer.

Note: If the Indexing service option is already checked, then please uncheck and reboot the computer. Once rebooted, again turn it on.  It should work.

Thanks!
Krish.
Hi Krish - the problem is that I have already turned off Indexing Service, rebooted and the re-checked Indexing Service - but it still doesn't work.

Hi Krish, I really do appreciate your help.

When I run the Windows search services, it turns on and then off again after 2/3 seconds.
The lower screen shot is the message.

What next?
Thanks. Stuart
Where is the screen shot?

Ok. This is my next steps.

Please create a new user and try login in to that, Check Windows search services is started.

If the indexing service is working in new login, then the problem with Useraccount.

Please check and let me know the status.

Thanks!

Krish.
Hi.
Tried everything including new user account, but no difference.

Here is the screenshot (the lower window is the central window blown-up). I get this result no matter what I try.

Hi again Krish,

I have got to the .regtrans... and .blf files to delete, but it comes back with "this file cannot be deleted because it is open in SYSTEM"

I have looked in Task Manager and can't see where to turn it off. I will turn off indexing and see if that works, but if I am still on the wrong track, please put me right. Thanks
Stuart
If you are unable to delete those files. Please try login in to the safemode.

Thanks!
Krish.
Hi Krish

Tried safe mode and it still won't allow me to delete these files!

If I use this HDD as an external drive by swapping an older running HDD into this laptop, can I access and delete these files ? Is there any danger that it will screw up the system when putting this HDD back?

Thanks. Stuart
I guess that is the last option. But before that we have lot of ways to resolve this.
 Please try the following links.

Are you able to stop the services and try deleting those files.?

Hi Krish,

Nope, the barrier is that I can't stop the services and that is why I am stuck.
Can you tell me how to stop the services please?

Thanks. Stuart
Please find the attached screenshot. Let me know if you are getting any error
message while stopping the search service.

Krish provided excellent help, but in short, my system is so screwed up with this and other problems that I have just spent the past 24 hours going back to an ol HDD and the problems are not reocurring and indexing is happening.
