Your domain has to be at 2008 functional level to run Exchange 2010.
it should run fine i dont think it will have issues unless you have configures the server 2008 at as a secondary or primary dc with forest level to 2008

if the 2008 server has not features installed i.e. AD or DC it should be fine just add that server as a member to the 2003 DC. keep in mind that you need the 2003 DC to 2003 forest level no the 2000 native or 2003 interm
How do i check to see if 2003 is configured/ready for exchange 2010? (forest level).
Just run the Exchange installation. It will make the necessary updates to Active Directory as part of the installation process.

If, by chance, you want to make the changes outside the setup, run setup /preparead from the installation media.
Sorry - meant 2003 not 2008.  Don't take my MCITP away!
