Join server 2008 r2 running SQL server 2008 to domain

I have a server 2008 r2 server that is not part of a domain, let's call it SVRSQL. It is running SQL server 2008 standard, lets call it SVRDC. I have another server doing nothing that I want to make a domain controller.

Can I safely join SVRSQL to the SVRDC domain controller as a member server without bringing down any sql services? I'm afraid that since it's now part of a domain that SQL services won't start.

Thanks!

Hi,

You will have to reboot the server when you join it to the domain so you will have service interruption.  You then should rename SQL Server internally to reference it's new domain membership, which won't require downtime by using these steps:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143799.aspx

You will also want to make sure to check security to see if you want to give domain users access.  Your local users will stay the same as long as you don't rename the local server name.
