Looking for suggestions on an Instant Messaging client - Universal and patch friendly

We are looking for a universal IM client that can be configured with as many vendors are possible (hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc) and can be easily patch.

The IM will be installed in 80% MS windows 7 workstations and 20% MACs so it will be great if the client can work on both platform.

Any suggestions and reason why we should go with that client will be greatly appreciated.

I really like Pidgin:

It has encrypted chat message capabilities so we use it at work.

The Mac OSX version is called Adium (it's the same thing though):
Oh here's the page on plugins:

And in the security section we use the "Off-the-Record Messaging" for encrypted chat.  You can enable it by opening pidgin then clicking on tools -> plugins -> and check the box for "Off-the-Record Messaging"

Really the best solution will be cloud based IM solution. Cost is not an issue if the solution is worth the money. Any ideas?
