How to: SSL certificate

Hi Experts,

I want to secure my website and use https:// mode. I have never done it before, so I have few questions. First of all, I need to purchase an SSL certificate, is that right? Then install it on my domain? Sounds simple, but can you explain how to do it step by step?
My domain is hosted on virtual server (VPS), which uses Paralells.
I asked my hosting provider's technical support and expected some help, but they said they don't provide support about SSL.

Thanks for any help! :)

If this is your own server/website you can use and create an SSL ceriticate for your website for free.

Now in order to give you some instructions you need to provide som info like what OS you are using and the goal of the certifificate

Thanks, here it is:
Version: Parallels Plesk Panel v10.4.4_build1013111102.18 os_CentOS 6
OS: Linux 2.6.32-042stab055.16
It's a website with services for mariners, user needs to login to get some materials.
We want to make our website more 'trustable' and safer.
Also, we noticed some unusual activity on the website lately and decided to focus a bit on security.

Ok, I purchased the ssl certificate, it's all done, but my question is: how to make it start working with my domain?

Thanks. I purchased the certificate as mentioned in my last comment.
I purchased RapidSSL for $27. I've done everything on the Plesk panel, but I also need to do something with my websites files I suppose? I mean, upload certificate file to my ftp or something?

Ok, I've done according to rapidssl instruction and checked if the certificate is installed, it says 'successfull', but when I go to https://[my domain] it still displays 'untrusted connection, why?
is it a wildcard certificate? You need to type host.domain.com or whatever your certificate is issued for.

I have no idea it's wildcard or not, what's the difference? When I test the certificate installation, it says it's all installed correctly, but my website still shows http and if I insert https into address bar, there's standard message for untrusted connections.
