asked on

trunk and access vlan

I saw the statement below on a Catalyst 2960S:

interfac gig0/4
switchport access vlan 10
switch[prt mode trunk

I am not sure how to understand this. I have my gi0/4 as an access port, but also a trunk. Any thoughts?

It looks to me that VLAN 10 is untagged on that port, and all other traffic is tagged.

Another way to read it is that if the port is set in access mode, then it will be on VLAN10.  But the device may ignore the command when it is in trunk mode.

"It looks to me that VLAN 10 is untagged on that port, and all other traffic is tagged." Not sure if this statement is correct because when I set an access port meaning everything goes through this port is tag with vlan 10.

In your 2nd statement, is there a way to see that the access mode is ignored from the switch?

Thx

Traffic going out the interface will be untagged.  Untagged traffic coming in the interface will be assigned to VLAN 10.
Got ya. Thx

Is there a phone and PC off this port?  If not, what is behind this port?
