Backup Exec Maxing Out RAM as well as Large File Copying

I am running into a situation that is very confusing to me.  I am using Backup Exec 2010 R2 to make file backups that I point to a removable 3.0 USB LaCie 6TB 2Big Quadro device.  I also create .vhd files using Disk2VHD and point them to be saved on that drive.  Whenever I do any copying of large files (~300-500 GB) or run multiple Backup Exec jobs at once, the RAM of the machine the LaCie device is connected to slowly turns all RAM on standby to Modified.  It eventually maxes out the RAM of the machine which causes backups and copies to dramatically lower in speed.  Sometimes, it releases its stranglehold on the RAM, and it subsides back to being on Standby.  Other times it releases a little bit of RAM and then reclaims it.

Is this normal behavior?

Any and all help is appreciated.
