1) Can the firmware only be upgraded by telnet and tftp?
2) Does the switch have to be upgraded per version ?

1) xmodem is also possible (if you have xp with HyperTerminal). Instead of enabling telnet on win7, you can download putty
http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-hyperterminal/

2) If you wonder if you could bypass versions of software, yes you can, when you observe the release notes.

AFAIK there should be a place in HTTP web console where you can Upg FW.

As ienaxxx mention on some procurves web-up/download is possible.
You can do it on 2610: web->Configuration->up/download
-but not on 2626, so you have to download a tftp-server or whatever in any case.

A switch is a device that filters and forwards packets of data between LAN segments. Switches operate at the data link layer or the network layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model and therefore support any packet protocol. LANs that use switches to join segments are called switched LANs or, in the case of Ethernet networks, switched Ethernet LANs. A hub is a connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. A hub contains multiple ports; when a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
