How do I allow ActiveSync through Microsoft Security Essentials?

We have a crazy virus that I am trying to get rid of and we need to have Microsoft Security Essentials installed on the server to protect it from this virus, but ActiveSync won't work and I've read on other posts on EE that MSE will not allow ActiveSync to work.  How do I add ActiveSync as an exception in Microsoft Security Essentials??

microsoft security essentials normally will not install on a server, it is NOT designed for or supported on server sku's.  Forefront OTOH is designed for servers.

I ended up just removing MSE.  As soon as I removed it, ActiveSync snapped right back into action.  Thing is.. we had this nasty worm and MSE was the only AV that would get rid of the stupid thing so I really would like to be able to use MSE on the servers.
I know I'm very late to this party, but just to confirm for the next person who comes along - I can confirm MSE breaks activesync on Exchange 2003/Server 2003. It seems to cause no issues with Exchange 2010 on Server 2008R2, where I have at least 8 running, with no issues, however (and it's effectively built in to 2012 upwards and causes no issues there, either).

I had 1 2003 server, added MSE to it and ActiveSync breaks on all iOS devices immediately (oddly enough, Android devices remained uneffected). Removed it, iOS is happy again. Added it back, iOS breaks again, remove it, it's fine, so it seems pretty strongly correlated.
