contacts import doesn't populate the e-mail address field

I have a file of contacts that is saved in Excel 2003. When I import them into Outlook 2010 all columns populate the respective fields except for the e-mail addresses. I moved the column that contains the addresses to a new location in the file in hopes it was a one to one import (first column to first field but that didn't work). Any ideas?....thanks

In Outlook, you have to map the fields to the ones in the spreadsheet.

Look about half way down in the Import section regarding map custom fields.
