Is there a maximum number of files that can be stored in a single directory on a Windows 2008 Server?

The absolute limit on the number of files per NTFS volume is 2 at the 32nd power minus 1*, but this would require 512 byte sectors and a maximum file size limit of one file per sector. Therefore, in practice, one has to calculate a realistic average file size and then apply these principles to that file size.
