AIX HMC question

Hi,

I'm new to AIX HMC.  I got  IBM P505 and It has 2 HMC port.  What is the purpose of using  HMC instead of direct console connection?

HMC is a Linux based integrated appliance (hardware and software).

It is used to set up and control PowerVM virtualization for your machine.

Alternatives are the pure software appliance IVM which runs in a logical partition of its own, or the Systems Director component SDMC.

If your machine still has the default full-system partition and if you don't want to partition your box then the direct console connection is sufficient.
When accessing your box in "standby" mode ("Power Off") then the console port will connect to the so-called ASMI which can be used to perform some basic customization - but not virtualization, that's what HMC, IVM or SDMC are meant for.

HMC must be purchased separately, IVM comes with your PowerVM license at no additional fee, and SDMC is a separately licensed (and payable) part of Systems Director.
