How do you make Quick VPN 1.4.2.1 on Windows 8 Pro work?

Fresh install of Windows 8 Pro.  Installed Quick VPN 1.4.2.1 to connect to work Linksys RV042 router.  It goes all the way to "verifying network" and times out and asks if I want to wait for the remote gateway to respond. This appears to be a known issue.  Is there a workaround?

QuickVPN is a free and limited product. The workaround in this case would be to get a client application known to work. I use NCP Secure Entry (www.ncp-e.com) and the newest version of this product is Windows 8 compatible. They offer a full function trial period to test and they support you during the test period if you need it.

The price tag, $144 for a single license, was unexpected.  I am not adverse to paying for a client application, but given my limited requirements (after all, what I was using is free), That price is a steep.  Is there an alternative that costs less than what it cost to upgrade to Windows 8?

Take a look at Shrew Soft. It is a free VPN client and works on Windows 7 (I have some clients who use it). I saw one indication that is suppports Windows 8, so it is worth a try.

I use VPN for multiple clients frequently, so I use the NCP client personally.
