Modem security on MFD

Is there still a security concern about have the little multifunctional printer / fax / copiers connected to the internal LAN?

Is it really possible to navigate into the internal network by connecting to the fax modem?

I am looking for proof that this can be done or why it cannot be done.

Thanks,

Possible? Yes
Likely? Not very
To access a network thru a modem would truly require a level of patience that is not common amongst hackers, nor is it needed, since most systems are broadband connected.  There is no way to increase the speed of access over a phone line.

Samsung secures their MFP, see this document: http://www.samsung.com/us/it_solutions/business/_pdf/Multifunction%20Printer%20Security.pdf

This one highlights how a hacker might go about accessing network info via a particular MFP, in this case a Minolta, as well as how to mitigate the problem.
