sql server 2008 r2 express install

I am installing a new instance of this on a new machine and I can't access the local server.  I have the management studio installed and I can use it to access my db on my remote server but it can not find the local one.  Any ideas?

...the server was not found or was not accessible...

If I browse for it nothing shows up for local servers.
