VMWare vSphere Hardware Monitoring/Email Alerts

I am using the free version of VMWare vSphere 5.0 to manage a few virtual machines and I was wondering if there are any free options to monitor hardware events and to have the capability to send email alerts if something has failed or is failing.  vCenter has the capability but since that isn't free by any means I am trying to find a free alternative to it.  Any ideas?

You could try Nagios. But you are limited with what the Free version offers, because you cannot change many of the options, because management is read only on ESXi (free).

After much research I have decided to set up a Dell OpenManage Essentials server to catch SNMP traps.

I was not given an answer I had hoped for and did more research with Dell on my own.
