profile sync for sharepoint 2010

I just configured an AD profile sync from a 2010 sharepoint server from another domain. The user can login but their name is being displayed as domain\username they also have only a few settings in their my settings, they do not have full display name pulled from AD. I ran a full profile sync but no change. They are also not showing up in the user profile list. I can find them on a search but only if I search for domain\username. Any ideas

1. Are you saying that the user is in a different domain than SharePoint? If so, is there a one way trust between?

2. Is the complete information in the profile database for the user?  Click your User Profile Application then use the View User Profiles link to look up the user.

Yes different domain and yes unfortunately again a one way trust. Where can i locate the profile database for the user is this through the main sharepoint interface or on the DB server
It's what I specified in question 2.  Yes, Central Admin in SharePoint - App Mgmt - Manage Service Apps - Click your User Profile App - then click Manage User Profiles.

If the data is all there in the database, you don't really have an issue.  This is an unfortunate side effect to one-way trusts in SharePoint.  Full user data doesn't show up for users untill they are considered "active" on the site by adding/modifying something.  After that happens, their data will show up within 15 minutes.

One way around this is to use service accounts from the user's domain, which may or may not be an option.

Thanks we are using a service account from the other domain. The user only show up in manage user profile search when they are searched for as domain\username but not by first name second name
Did you look within the profile?  You can click the dropdown on their accoutn in the list and choose to edit profile.  This will show you all the data that was brought in from AD

If you don't see their correct display name, can you verify it's in AD properly?
Try below and let me know if you see some error in import log

For a single user:
Set-SPUser -Identity ‘domain\Username’ –Web http://sitecollectionurl –SyncFromAD

For multiple users in a site collection:
Get-SPUser –Web http://sitecollectionurl | Set-SPUser –SyncFromAD
I would advise against using the work around solution above as your fix.

Ok I checked the edit profile and can see there is no display name pulled in even though the display name is in AD but strangely there is another user who is in the same AD and his details are showing up in Sharepoint and he has the same info in AD.

I tried the For a single user:
Set-SPUser -Identity ‘domain\Username’ –Web http://sitecollectionurl –SyncFromAD but get an error message

cannot get the full name or email address of user.....
category info invalid data... fullyqualifiederrorid...
Are you absolutely positive the user has their First, Last, Display name populated in AD?  Verify the account name is really the same.

Another possibility, though unlikely, is if someone messed with AD property mappings.  By default Firs, Last, and Display all import from their respected fields in AD.  Take a look at the User Profile Property list in your UPA and verify they are still importing from those fields.

You could also try to delete that profile from the database (using the UPA GUI), then re-importing.

Finally, you have the ability to "watch" the import as it happens to check for individiual errors.  Open the ForeFront miisclient tool on your Sync server in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Synchronization Service\UIShell
