I have VPN on my laptop to remote to work. Is it safe to use public WIFI hotspots,  Airport, coffee shops, and such?

Just do not stay online for a long period of time. Make sure you always disconnect

Wifi is very easy to hack into.

Not that safe.

But for accessing web content and email not a big problem.

Just be careful when you use a public wifi hotspot.
