You could go with the above, or similar third party tool, or depending on HOW users are accessing the shared mailbox, you may be able to schedule a powershell script to run daily and capture this information. Now....the trick is, if users have the Shared mailbox as a mailbox that shows up in their profile, then when they send emails on behalf of that shared mailbox, they WILL NOT be stored in the shard mailboxe's sent items. However, if users add an addtional profile and access the shared mailbox directley, or log into owa, and "select other user's mailbox," or log in directley to the shared mailbox, then the sent items wil lbe stored in tha shared mailbox. Make sense?
The below script will grab some information on the mailbox:

Get-MAilboxStatistics -identity MailboxUSerID(or e-mail address) | Select Displayname,ItemCount | Export-Csv .\MailboxItemCount.csv
Send-MailMessage –From MailServer@Domain.com –To address@domain.com –Subject “DailyITemCountReport” –Body “Attached, please find the report for the number Mailbox Items”  -Attachments “.\MailboxItemCount.csv ” -smtpserver HUBTransport@domain.com

this should at least meet the basic requirements.
