Embedding audio that's free and good quality

Hello,

Instead of paying $20/month for Audio Acrobat, is there a good free way to embed audio into a website? I have Flash CS4 if that helps, but hopefully there's a simple way.

We want it to look and sound nice. It's just going to be someone talking, around 2-5 minutes

Thanks.

400 a day is small although hostgator is a shared service. They were one of the largest clients at thePlanet wich is not softlayer.com.  At the time thePlanet did not have a shared plan and hostgator basically was just re marketing thePlanet services.   Anyway, your site is on a box with others probably in the high hundreds low 1000's.   This allows you to pay very cheap rates and for most small sites gives you all the bandwidth and processing  power you need.   When you get to high end database and media files, you start to see things slow down.

With just hosting a handful of these things and small amount of traffic, it is probably fine hosting these on your own and using something like the  jplayer.    If you use soundcloud, you are basically on their cdn wich is probably amazon.  Soundcloud is meant for audio recordings and if you look at the pricing, it is free up until a point.  You get 100 downloads.  Otherwise you pay 29 Euros a year which is just under $40 US.   If you get more then 3 people listening a day you will need the paid version.

Try hosting it yourself and see how that works.

No need for flash at all.

You can upload your recording to soundcloud.com.  You can also host it on your own site and use html5. http://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_audio.asp   http://jplayer.org/

If you have low traffic hosting it on your own site is fine.  If you are on a shared service like godaddy or 1and1, there could be a little lag.   The best thing is to use a cdn to host your video and audio.  A cdn will distribute the file to their network of servers around the world.  If you are in CA, then the CDN uses a server in California.   If you are in the UK, then you get a UK server.  Otherwise, if your server is in AZ and the viewer is in NY, the file has to be transferred that distance and that is where the lag can come in.

For small sound files and low traffic volume you will be good on your own site though.

Is soundcloud.com a free cdn?

Kind of http://soundcloud.com/premium?ref=top  For your one short piece it looks that way.  This is a good option for your site and social sharing.

Will the free version work? We're eventaually going to have dozens of these audios, but we're starting with one for now.

I'm assuming that hosting it ourselves could cause delay. Our site gets about 400 visitors a day at hostgator, but not very many will go to the page where the audio is playing
