I want to set the minimum height of the div and then if the content grows then the height should grow. I have done some googling but nothing has worked for so far. The page is http://nkarch.lifeintheuktest.co/the-work.aspx.

i want to set the minimum height to 800px. At the moment i have set the height of mainContainer to 1000x as the min height not working.

You have floated elements in #ProjectsGrid, so to make sure the container expands, you need to specify overflow:hidden in #ProjectsGrid

.mainContainer {
margin: 0 auto;
padding: 0;
width: 960px;
background-color: black;
min-height: 800px;
margin-bottom: 0px;
}

#ProjectsGrid {
padding-left: 3px;
margin-top: 2em;
overflow: hidden;
}
