freebsd squid box-unix

hi experts,  I'm a newbie to freebsd or literally don't know anything about it...

I have clients on my windows domain connecting to the to the internet via the Freebsd.

squid has been installed and it authenticates users before they connect to the internet,
this all worked normally. But, today squid will ask or prompt for authentication more than once...  4 to 5 times before it says cache access denied on the the browser. this happens to all users, weather they using chrome, iexplorer or firefox.

Before we go deep into this, how do reset or change my root password without a disk? I forgot my password, will this be safe, without losing any config or data. I found this link below, is this positive?

http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-freebsd-reset-recover-root-password.html

thanx
