recording an acoustic guitar on ipad-garage band

can i record my acoustic guitar w/garage band on my ipad 3 ( think it's 3)- do not care about good quality,sound- effects- then i want to turn into mp3

is there steps to do this?
when i open garage band - all i see is keyboard to play - and even that i am unable to see how record a song if i play it on that-
but mainly want to record melodies with my guitar for practise

Try this:  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/amplitube-free-for-ipad/id373743686?mt=8

It's free and will do what you want.  Also when you want to get the files you record off of it and on to your computer to convert to MP3 or something, connect your iPad to your computer with the cable, open iTunes, navigate to your iPad on the left, then open up the Apps tab and select this app from the list and see any associated files/recordings it has with it.  You should be able to just export or drag and drop them to your desktop.
