Access to SharePoint for external users/partners

I need to give access to our SharePoint (or portion of it) to some external users. What would be the simplest yet secure way of doing it? We currently have a single, simple farm with one front-end server and a SQL server. Don't have resources for some expensive solution. I might need access to 50 or so external users.

I would love to hear from somebody who had a problem like this and found a good solution.

In simple terms, you create a new web application in Central Admin, and you set this up so external users can access it.

In practical terms, this means setting up your firewall to allow external users to connect to your server safely and security, and all the security issues that raises.  You will also need an addtional Sharepoint licence to allow external users to access your system which is not cheap.

I would advise you to get help on doing this as it is quite a sophisticated thing to do and requires specialist networking and security skills if you want to do it correctly.
