I recently had my SBS 2008 Server Crash.  I do have a Windows Backup of the Server on an External Hard Drive.

I purchase a new Server and will like to restore my SBS 2008 Server from the backup that I have.

How do I go about restore the server on the new hardware?  Do I need to install SBS 2008 on the new hardware first?

Are the hardware the same?  if so, it is fairly straight forward, if not, you got some drivers to worry about.

Here is the link you want.

Different hardware and different Raid.  The old server was set on a Raid 0 and new server is set on Raid 5

Just so I'm understanding the technet article correctly.... I should attached the external hard drive with the backup file, boot from cd, then select Repair Your Computer.

Then I'll be able select the backup file then it should do a complete server restore?

Also there is note at the very bottom that a Server 2008 64 bit disk will not work for the recovery??  Is this correct?  And to use a Windows Vista Disk?  Seems strange to me.

yes, but you must use the command line listed on the link.

No, you can use it, the only worry are the drivers.  It may not even boot if you do not have the proper drivings trying to load.
