Have you checked the forest and AD functional levels so a 2008 DC can be added?

Here is information you need to review and determine what to do based on your network

You need to prepare the schema for the introduction of an R2 DC.  You should run ADPREP32 from your 2003 DC.

You must run the ADPREP32 from the 2008 R2 DVD to get your schema to version 47.  If you run it from the 2008 DVD, it will bring the schema up to version 44 which will NOT allow you to introduce an R2 DC.

Then, would join the Windows 2008 R2 computer as a member server to the domain.  Finally, run DCPROMO on the 2008 R2 DC.

Can I run these during the day or should I wait until after hours?

Tony GiangrecoCommented:
If your server is not busy, they can be run during the day, but I always suggest after hours to be safe.

Set the new server to dymanic IP and dns.

Verify you can ping the other DC's and then retry.

what do you mean by dynamic IP and DNS?

Tony GiangrecoCommented:
Go to Start, Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center

Click Change Adaptor Settings in the left hand coner

Right Click Local Area Connection and select properties

Scroll Down to Internet Protocal Version 4 TCP/IP

Highlight it and select properties

The selection for both top and bottom sections should be Obtain Dynamicly. If anything else is entered, click the Dymanic radio buttons for both. Click ok, close and make sure you can ping the other DC's.

So I think I found out why it isn't working but don't know how to fix it.  When I run the dsquery * cn=chema,cn=configuration, dc=mike,dc=org -scope base -attr objectversion command it returns a 30 instead of a 47.  How do I get to version 47?

does it matter that the windows server is server 2003 sp2 and not windows 2003 R2 SP2?  My schema master only has sch14.ldf - sch30.ldf?
