Iphone and Ipads not able to sync with exchange 2003

I have found that a number of my users are unable to get their new IPads and IPhones to sync to exchange 2003 if they have a large number of email items in their exchange store.

Other than upgrading to 2008 and ex 2007 how can I resolve this isssue ? I have been trying for years to get them to cleanup their mailboxes.

If the users have more than 5,000 items in a single folder, then Activesync on Exchange 2003 will have problems.

active sync is fin.. it works on users with I phones with less email.  The main problems are with user that have 25,000+ email items.
