Microsoft dpm 2012 quick install for vm lab

Hi,

I have a vm vsphere 5.1 environment in which I m looking for a quick backup solution.

Vm-environment is Microsoft: ad 2008 r2, sccm 2012, sql 2008 r2 and xenapp c6.5.

Instead of backing up within vmware, why not microsoft dpm, which software I have.

Mu questions:
-how good is it, also the bare metal option
-does it integrate with vmware?
-what about a quickstart guide, just need basic backup, nothing more

Any input welcome!

DPM is Agent based, and Backs up a VMware VM, just like it would a physical server, at file level, and not a block level, it's ineffecient and slow. e.g. it does not backup the VMDK.

See my EE Article for better alternatives

or use

or Ghetto VCB!

or investigate and use SAN Snapshots on your ZFS SAN.

Thanks for input and your great article.
I ll check nexenta snapshots later. My main concern is to have a free reliable backup of my vm s (on Nexenta now ) in a quick and dirty way, preferrably scheduled. What would be best option then?
