Lost DVR Password for Security Cameras

I have a location with cameras already setup connected to DVR in which someone put in place during prior ownership. I cant access at the DVR or through software via IP because I dont have password. I really dont know what brand of DVR< It just says DVR on front . It has serial port along with 24 or so camera inputs. What should I do to get around the problem?

Somewhere there must be a product name and number, without that can't really assist at all.
Depending on the access point it could be the router ISP  could be a personal access point  that can't be changed because of ownership ISP service?
Is it a switch or a DVR with 24 ports or 24 inputs?
You could contact the landlord or try looking at the rear of the DVR
or tons of images of DVR with 24 ports
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=DVR+with+24+ports&hl=en&tbo=d&rlz=1T4GGNI_en-GBAU497AU497&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=lqf8UNl6jJeIB-nfgaAG&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAA&biw=1731&bih=772

Then maybe we can proceed and set it for you instead, you may not need to use a previous owner if you have the hardware. As far as I know the hardware is not bound to the previous owner.

The location is a little ways from where I am located. It does have 24 BNC inputs into back of DVR  and some kind of central power unit for cameras and as I said it has serial port on back. It is has a dial on right front with recessed area for controlling with fingertip. It, as I recall, has name on front that says Digital Video Recorder thats about it.
Do some of these common DVR's used for cameras have a reset procedure such as a recessed reset button? I am just not familiar with them..

The router has been changed and ISP account as well when ownership was changed. The previous owner is not on good terms with us so getting pw and other info from him is not likely.

Hi cebu1014. still gathering the pieces in my head so I can see what you have there. Once the pieces make a picture then I should be able to help you. No sense in guessing.
To my knowledge a DVR does have a reset, same with a router.
Mine uses admin for both, sometimes lower case admin and sometimes capital Admin

I'm not sure here how you access the DVR but with a router
open a web page? type in 192.168.1.1 then you should be presented with a screen
For the DVR,
The default username and password is admin for the username and admin for the password. Also you can try 888888 for the username and 888888 for the password
(This particular username and password only works at the DVR).
If you have change this to something else you can reset the password by taking the internal battery out of the DVR.
Make sure the power is unplugged from the unit.
Then take the internal battery out for a few minutes, then plug back in .
Power on the unit and the day and time will be reset to 1-1-2000.
Now use the admin account to log in and the password will be 000000 .
After you logging in you can change the password of the admin username, then you must change the date and time.

I remoted into a PC at store using VPN connection.I had no luck with different user and pw combinations from that PC running DVR software to the IP address of DVR. Is the port 8000? This I have been using. It just says connection failed with all my attempts. You mentioned internal battery. Not being there I was wondering if there is a cover for the battery maybe on bottom  and easy to get to?

Just like in a tower you have a cmos battery, it's a small round silver coin
You'd need to unscrew the main screws lift of the case.

So you wont have the any setup disc?
Is software required?
Is everything connected?
This DVR is connected to the PC? The cameras connected to the DVR?
What software came with it?
Maybe we could use a different software

OK thats what I was wondering regarding battery. I was hoping for easier way to reset. I may simply need to go back to office and fool with it more.

 No setup disk.

It is connected via ethernet cable I know IP address since I unplug ethernet I cant ping the IP address any more so IP is right.
The cameras are connected and DVR is recording.

I am using dual codec intenet relative software which came from coworker. I used this to connect to other DVR at home office with  cameras  since we dont have pw on it. I connect using admin and port 8000.

Thanks

Hello cebu1014 thanks for that may be gave me enough.
Looking at the photo/s I did see this number RS-232  so this a DVR RS-232  or
Rs-232 Dvr-n Series
What I found
Using Rs-232 Dvr-n Series
Many people have had questions about making RS-232 work on Channel Vision DVR-N series. So, this is how to make RS-232 work on the DVR-4, 8, and 16N.
With the RS-232 commands for the DVR, the DVR ID does not matter.

on a side note I am pretty happy to be here again
We lost Internet and phone/ mobiles and TV channels wow for a whole 2 days, devastating for me and many others who all sat down at 6pm the other day to watch the last great game of tennis and then a minute into it
up pops a screen no service.
I thought it was interference, then noticed no net then the phone and mobile yikes.
Luckily my brother was able to ring in to me  from out of town and put the phone next his TV what a funny experience with his commentary. But I did get to hear the ponks and urhs screeches of tennis shoes with crowd shrieks. And of course Jockavich won to my relief.
Anyway we are back on now.
Funny to learn that Seven network runs off the Internet as well.

Hi merete
The link provided is the DVR that I have. I found the manual and I see that I had been using wrong port number . It is 37777 for this device. I remoted in using the port and  user admin and pw admin. It said connection established of which I did not have before. However, I saw no images of live camera views on screen of software. I also downloaded off same site the software that was recommeded to view via a PC. This I can try very soon.

I am not sure about using the serial port at this point to connect to DVR. What I was looking for and have not found was some kind of reset by selecting some button combinations such as press and hold to reset pw to factory.

I am getting DVR log in error when using the PSS (Pro Surveilance  Software) for PC found at link I gave you. When I add device then try to play back it says DVR not logged in. I tried admin with out password other combinations etc. Also, using other simplier software I use it says connected but will not view cameras. I get same result and message on another DVR system where I know password but intentially enter wrong password there.  Really at square one of problem. I dont know how to reset due I dont see notes in manual to do this procedure or any particular how to setup using menu directly on the DVR console itself.  That is really what I am looking for.  Unfortunately, I dont have manuals at the location where DVR is located. The picture in link below is the same that we have except we have  in front view  32 led lights for the 32 camera inputs. The back side  picture of DVR on this page is identical to what we have. See  link below

Press enter? If there is a enter button or menue?
Are you still remoting in?
Do you have a remote control, most DVR have the main navigation menue access point from a remote control  rather than on the front of the console.
